I guess spoilers, maybe?

Alright, so I'm at The End of the World right now and I just cleared the room before the Ansem fight. That in itself was a miserable experience. It was full of enemies that just continuously attack you, and some of the attacks provide such little feedback/enough time to go ahead and dodge them that when you have six of the same dude in the same room it makes it really hard to stay alive for more than a few seconds. Anyways, I went back and did some grinding and was able to go back to that room and get through it in what was one of the most intense and most bullshit moments I've ever experiencing in gaming. Clear that room now and onto the Ansem fight and that first bit is no problem, super easy. But the second phase is super bullshit. If you don't mange to dodge his little heartless thing, it'll latch onto you and deal damage that seems like it's absolutely impossible to dodge and it's really pissing me off. I could go on and on about why I don't like this game as a whole, but this last area has been an absolute trash fire of bad level design and absolutely garbage boss mechanics.

Am I playing the game wrong or was literally everyone wrong in telling me that Kingdom Hearst 1 is a good game because I've not had a single moment of fun this entire playthrough.

That bit is hilariously telegraphed.

Also, instead of grinding did you try casting Stop and Gravity.

I mean, does it really matter much at this point? If you've managed to get this far you shouldn't be asking these questions.

And yeah, the last room is infamously hard and kinda bullshit, don't worry about it.

You can dodge the Guardian really easily. It has a very obvious tell.

Ansem 2 is the hardest story fight so it's not surprising that it's causing an issue. A couple tips for his fight is to keep Aero up at all times to lower the damage you take, try to watch him more as his attack with the Guardian is telegraphed along with the "SUBMIT" line. If you get caught try using Ars Arcanum, it's a triangle attack ability that won't be disrupted by Guardian. Aside from that, you can block his charge attack.

I'd suggest bringing plenty of items since you can't fall back on Summons or your party for that.

Is it? When he's latched onto me I'm not seeing anything that indicates he's about to just destroy me.

That last room is known to be way hard, but I saw someone else complain about that fight a week ago or so and I don't get it, nearly every one of his moves are way telegraphed. Just keep an eyes on his attack and you'll be able to recognize what he's about to do easily.

I take it you haven;t been using magic much?

While possessed by Ansem's Guardian you can prevent yourself from taking damage by hitting the x button when the command says freeze. Of course this locks you in place so make sure you're not in position to get hit by Ansem. Alternatively you can abuse something with i-frames like strike raid.

Is it? When he's latched onto me I'm not seeing anything that indicates he's about to just destroy me.
The attack that causes you to get possessed is telegraphed by Ansem yelling SUBMIT!

If you're at the part I'm thinking of, before the gaurdian attacks you, the attack command in the bottom right changes to something else. If it does that, wait and dodge until it dissapears. It only attacks you if you press the other command.

When he latches into you just don't press the attack button when the "?" appears above your head.

SUBMIT

Yeah, Ansems tells are really easy to see coming. Just keep aero on you, and dodge.

I mean, nothing in Kingdom Hearts is particularly hard, even on Proud Mode, so it's weird that you're having issues. You probably aren't playing optimally - using Magic - but considering how miserable you seem to be from the game I don't know if you'd enjoy it even if you were.

Yeah, your Attack Command will randomly change to "Freeze" when Guardian possesses you. At worst you can roll away from Ansem until that phase ends.

Kingdom Hearts 1 combat is a bit rough, but you're literally at the end, so all I can say is push through it (and make sure to experience the secret bosses, because they're all extremely cool). The phase you're struggling at in particular is basically the hardest bit of the fight too (not that I think it's particularly hard - more tedious because you have to just stall while he rages around).

  • #17
Collect all the Dalmatians so you can unlock Aeroga. It'll help reduce the damage by quite a lot. Also, right when Ansem says "submit", dodge roll away. That's the best way to avoid getting hit by that move. There's also a predictable pattern for when he uses that move. Most of the time, he uses that move after he uses the block move.
Seven Force

Why force yourself to continue if you're not enjoying it?

And yeah, Ansem yelling SUBMIT and the guardian disappearing is the tell that it's going to go for the possession attack.

Also I assume you are playing on PS4? Final Mix difficulty is more difficult than standard on the OG release. Attacks do less damage, the healing algorithm is changed so you heal less.

Power through though. KH2 is miserable story and pacing wise, but its combat is really quite good. Especially compared to the first game.

Please tell me you're using Aero.

Your experience completely mirrors mine with KH1. I seriously believe it's one of the worst games I've ever played yet I made it all the way to the last phase of the final boss battle when I just gave up and watched the ending on YouTube. To say the gameplay is bad is an understatement and it blows my mind when people say this is their favourite game in the series.

Luckily, KH2 is such a huge step up in every sense, especially the gameplay. Starts off feeling like KH1 but quickly adds so many abilities and things to play with.

it was so bad im scared of playing the 2nd one (I bought the hd collection)

Also what keyblade are you using OP? It does sound like you're not really using magic, so you should probably use Divine Rose

  • #24
OP, you're playing Kingdom Hearts 1 like Kingdom Hearts 2. KH 1 is more reliant on spell usage especially during tough boss fights. You should be using Aero, Stop, and Gravity. You can technically win by just melee skills alone but it's the harder road. With your playstyle you'll definitely like KH 2 though.

I'll repeat this to you as well, you'll be fine for KH 2 because they refine the melee combat and add QTE specials to use during combat. I know a lot of people who struggled with KH 1 and called it bad simply because they didn't use magic. Square developed KH 1 with the mindset that you should consider all tools at your disposal.

Kingdom Hearts 1 is such a hard game to play in this day and age. And not hard regarding difficulty but hard because it has aged horribly and this is coming from a big Kingdom Hearts fan. It was such a pain playing through it again last year.

Kingdom Hearts 2 FM has aged fantastically though. Still such a fun game and a very good looking game too. If you're not enjoying KH1 then just drop it tbh

  • #26

Some people in here may be setting your expectations up a little high for KH2 OP. The gameplay is better, significantly better. But it has its own host of very glaring issues.

Played this for the first time this summer and some of those bosses were just annoying. The gameplay seems like it really didn't age too well and I got frustrated by a lot of those fights. Can't imagine what it was like for kids playing it back in the day.

I haven't played it in a while, but when I read that op is fighting ansem already, I was thinking the same thing.

I finished this with a borderline 100% a few months ago, to the point of getting to level 100 and beating the secret boss in Hollow Bastion. Throughout the run I saw it as a bit of a Dark Souls-lite with heaps of fanservice and fun side-games with the gummi ships, searching for secret items and finding the secret equipment and enemies (such as the little rare duder that needs to be juggled 100 times in Monstro). Really fun game IMO.
  • #33
The same happened to me. The problem was that I rushed through the game and got stuck underleveled at Ansem. But I just spammed potions... Bullshit fight in general.

Played though Kingdom Hearts in HD last year and it was just as good as 2002, if not better, so I hate this narrative on ERA that it's some poor experience now because it plays pretty differently than the rest of the series. The mechanics found in KH1 can be found in most action-adventure game to this day, such as emphasis on parrying, dodge and rolling, and area movement.

Just finished again a few hours ago while doing the speedster trophy, just roll out when he says "submit" wait ~1sec roll in and attack, that and use Aero so you wont get as much damage :P.

PS. If you happen to be hit with the heartless thingy, just keep rolling and use Cure while having leaf bracer to be inmune as needed

I agree that even though KH1 has aged, I still enjoy it every time I play it. Gameplay wise it's been outdone but as an overall package I wouldn't be surprised if someone said it's their favorite KH game.

Anyways OP, when Ansem says SUBMIT, move away.

If you think KH1 feels like jank, you can roll right on through and pretend COM doesn't exist.

Yeah, I ended up skipping CoM too. The battle system was not what I wanted. Felt too limited.

casting Aero? I don't remember ever doing that.
press "freeze"? I couldn't manage to do that and nobody told me anything about it

I beat Ansem dodging his attacks a la Dark Souls. It was earlier this year too. It wasn't fun, but it was satisfying. There was another part that I thought was way harder

and it comes right after this fight so... have fun OP

That room previously to that though I heard many people tell horrible things about it, but I don't remember it being hard at all.

I'm playing CoM at the moment and read some comments here about that game:

I don't know how I'm going to beat them there

Yeah I don't know about that. I just played KH1 on Proud Mode and the last part with Ansem in the Realm of Darkness was every bit miserable as he described. I'm just glad to be done with it and I'm playing KH2 now. Don't get me wrong KH1 is still my favorite game in the series, but Proud Mode really exposes how janky the game can be sometimes.

You're not playing it wrong. The first game is legit borderline crap. Just skip to KH2. That has its own problems with pacing and bullshit filler, but the general combat and mechanics are far better. It's at least a decent game even today.
